Where Historians Work is an interactive, online database that catalogs the career outcomes of historians who earned PhDs at universities in the United States from 2004 to 2017. This tool allows current and potential graduate students to understand the full scope of career options open to history PhDs.

AHA Surveys: Historians Teaching Off the Tenure Track

The AHA sought to collect and collate information about the working conditions of historians employed as contingent faculty. We developed two surveys, one for non-tenure-track faculty (NTT) and one for department chairs. The AHA will share a report with the results of the surveys later in 2025.

History, the Past, and Public Culture: Results from a National Survey

This project aspired to take America’s historical pulse by assessing public perceptions of, and engagement with, the discipline of history and the past. With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the AHA partnered with Fairleigh Dickinson University to develop and implement a national survey that explored the public’s definition of the term “history,” where audiences access history, which sources of history are perceived to be reliable, and more.
